A private health insurance rebate, also known as the Australian Government Rebate, is a government contribution to help lower the cost of private health insurance.
You may be able to claim the Australian Government Rebate as a reduction, or as a rebate through your annual tax return. Currently, the rebate amount you receive is based on your age and income.
In the 2026-27 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced a proposal to remove the additional age-based rebate that applies to some Australians aged 65 and over. Under the proposal, the rebate would be based on income only and all age groups would receive the same level of rebate.
This means Australians aged 65 and older could have their current higher rebate tier removed and will receive the same rebate as other Australians within their income bracket.
No. This is currently a proposal only. It’s not yet law and still needs to be voted on and passed through both houses of Commonwealth Parliament.
If the bill passes, the changes are expected to take effect from 1 April 2027. We’ll be in touch with members when an outcome is confirmed and let you know in advance if anything changes.
If the proposed changes are approved, your premiums may change depending on your income and the rebate you currently receive.
